Cité Episcopale + My Favorites
Cité Episcopale is home to several attractions. In the centre of the complex is the Cathedrale St-Leonce. Construction was started on it in the 10th century, and many other parts date back to the 12th and 13th century. Several different architectural styles are used here, but it's most impressive are Renaissance. Among them is an ornately carved walnut door depicting the Virgin's life. Also located here is the 5th century baptistery. It is one of the oldest in France, and, like many paleo-Christian baptisteries, it is octagonal in shape, and features eight black granite columns with white capitals. There are two separate sized doors here as well. The smaller door was used for entry, and once inside a bishop would wash the person's feet and baptize them. They would then exit through the larger door, which symbolized their enlarged spiritual stature. Also located inside the quarters is a 12th century cloister, whose ceiling is divided in 1, 200 small panels depicting animals, portraits and more by 15th century artists. The Musee Archeologique is here as well, and features numerous Roman antiquities that were discovered in the area. Admission to Cité Episcopale includes entry to all the sites, and an optional guided tour of the cloister and baptistery is available. Address: Rue de Fleury | Frejus Tel: +33 4 94 51 26 30
